I’ve talked to many small event businesses that don’t create service contracts with customers. Either they don’t have a system to create quick contracts, they don’t see the need, or they can’t make the time to customize the contract whenever a client wants one.
Yes, you can do business without contracts, but in the long run, it is best to cover your tracks.
When problems hit the fan (and they do!), you will have a system in place to provide for you, your team, and your customer. Even with small home parties, it’s best to not lose friends over small disagreements that would have been voiced in a simple contract.
Personally, a few of my clients have backed out of events at the last minute. Or we’ve showed up for a service, and they backed out onsite. Or they have changed an event’s date 3 times, and potentially killing two complete work days for me and my team. In the past, I’ve had customers try to get a refund on a full service provided, with little reason. Rain, snow, sickness, and family emergencies occur often with events. My contracts have covered all circumstances like these and does not leave my team and I with a great business loss.
Here are three reminders:
1.) Contracts make you look professional. From the time you quote pricing to when you get your final payment, you shine as someone who knows what they are doing. Customers know they are in good hands with a professional.
2.) Contracts that cover cancellation fees are very necessary to protect your investments of your time, your staff, costs, and more.
3.) Customer expectations are very high these days. Contracts control events when expectation exceed your agreed services.
Remember, trust is a two way street. We must develop a trusting relationship with our customers, where we show ourselves trustworthy and we can also trust them. Contracts will firm up this mutual trust. If your customer proves themselves untrustworthy, it might be best to not take on their event.
